Bamboo bikes are not only unique and beautiful; they are also strong and resistant!  We offer products, made from this renewable resource, with great design and quality; creating a sustainable enterprise in the long run.

The Bamboo Bikes Project’s goal is to develop a social enterprise model for self-sustenance that can be replicated in different underprivileged communities.

EcoCultura is leading a multidisciplinary team that will provide training in entrepreneurial skills and the craft of making bike frames from bamboo. The organization will also promote cycling through various activities.

UPDATE ON THE PROJECT

Recent activity

Last Friday, September 26th we finished the first of a series of social entrepreneurship workshops to make bamboo bike frames and accessories. The workshops will continue until January 2015 and include topics such as creative design, social and solidarity economy, harvesting and preparing bamboo, and entrepreneurial skills.

The workshop was a great experience for all.  We engaged in dynamic conversations, toured the instalations of Colegio/Talleres de las Aguas in Montebello, learned about bike geometry and ergonomics, watched ¨DIY videos¨ by Craig Calfee, assembled DIY kit, and had hands on experienced under the guidance of Jairo Suarez owner of Gallardo Bikes.  The team accomplished the goal of successfully assembling 4 bamboo bike frames in 5 days.

The community

The initial social enterprise will be in Montebello, Cali.   Montebello is the smallest suburban area near Cali, and the most densely populated. About 48% of the population is under 17 years old and 80% of youth between 18 and 25 don’t have access to higher education or to good quality jobs. This leaves a high number of youth wandering the streets, vulnerable to unsafe and unhealthy habits and in need for alternatives in occupation, education and income generation.

This is a collaborative project and we couldn’t have done it without the help from:

Fundacion Escuela para la Vida is a foundation working day to day with the youth through the program of Talleres de las Aguas.

Gallardo Bikes, a Colombian bamboo bike maker who is guiding the process to build the frames.

Craig Calfee, a designer and precursor of the bamboo bike since 1995 who is contibuting with his technical expertise and with the donation of a ¨DIY kit¨ for training,

Observatorio de Innovacion Social a program linked to the Universidad Nacional de Palmira contributing with design initiatives as well as program development.

Industrial Engineering students from The Pontificia Javeriana University from Cali who are adopting the project as their Graduation Project to do a feasibility study.

Coladisos a sustainable design organization assisting in the development of design capabilities.

Bochika.org , our fiscal sponsor is overseeing all contributions from US donors.

And individuals such as Juan Manuel Garcia and Juan Carlos Salmon who are providing their professional and entrepreneurial expertise.

What’s NEXT

We are continuing to build capacity, practicing the technique learned during the workshop, and developing the intended social enterprise. We seek support from family, friends, and the community at large during this early stage.

We need seed capital to start and built a strong foundation for this social enterprise.  Four youth from Montebello have received the initial training and they will continue the practice by making their own bikes! They will be doing quality testing on the bikes and joining local bike events to ride their unique bikes.  They will become trainers of other members of their community who join the Project in the near future.

The flow continues !!   “Start small, Grow Tall”  just like a Bamboo Plant 😉

Thanks to our Indiegogo campaign contributors, we are having three  workshops in bamboo frame making and design during this second half of the year.  The first workshop is a DIY bamboo frame making with Calfee Design materials, soon after we will be doing a “Design Lab” by COLADISOS where we’ll explore bike designs, and the third workshop will be an instructed bamboo bike frame workshop .  These three workshops are oriented to participants who will be supporting the training of the Montebello youth in 2015, and will be the seed for a bamboo bike making social enterprise.

This time we are giving you the opportunity to WIN a Bamboo Bike made in Colombia, product of this project.   People who purchased tickets to our Bike Gymkhana in January will participate in this raffle with those same numbers.   Also we will be mailing tickets to our Indiegogo contributors as a reward for their donation.  There is no maximum or minimum number of tickets to participate. Purchasing a ticket is not required to participate in the raffle. We ask for a suggested donation of $20.00 for a ticket to support the project. The winner will be announced on October 12th at the Manantial Market in Miami and the Bike will be handle to the winner by October 31st.

Continuamos fluyendo !!   “Todo lo grande comienza pequeño”

Gracias a quienes nos apoyaron en nuestra campaña de Indiegogo, estaremos realizando tres talleres de diseño y producción de marcos en bambú para bicicletas durante el segundo semestre del año. El primero es un taller “Hagalo usted mismo” con material de Calfee Design, el segundo es un “Laboratorio de Diseño” por COLADISOS donde exploraremos varios modelos, y el tercero es un taller dictado por un instructor experto.   Estos tres talleres estan orientados a participantes que apoyaran el entrenamiento de los jóvenes de Montebello en el 2015 y sera la semilla de una empresa social.

BambooCo Bikes en el Festival “Viva Guadua” en Cali

Buen día amigos!

Los invitamos a visitar, aprender y compartir en  “Viva Guadua”, el Segundo Festival Internacional del Bambú que se realizará en Cali – Montebello del 10 al 14 de Julio.

El programa del festival incluye talleres, conferencias, exhibiciones y una kermes. Todas estas actividades permitirán a los participantes aprender sobre el beneficio del bambú, construcción en guadua y el desarrollo de nuevos productos a partir este bello recurso renovable que abunda en Colombia.

EcoCultura exhibirá prototipos de los marcos en bambú e informara a los asistentes sobre el proyecto BambooCo Bikes que se planea realizar en Montebello en alianza con la Fundación Escuela para la Vida y la organización Coladisos.

Los esperamos!  Es una gran oportunidad para aprender sobre el trabajo que se realiza a nivel nacional e internacional con bambú y del beneficio que este enfoque brinda a toda la cadena productiva del que se conoce como “el acero vegetal”.

We invite you to visit, learn, and share during  “Viva Guadua”, The second International Bamboo Festival that will take place in Cali – Montebello from July 10 to 14.

The festival program includes workshops, conferences, exhibits, and a kermes. All these activities will give an oportunity to participants to learn about benefits of bambu, construction with guadua, and the development of new products from this beautiful renewable resource that is abundant in Colombia.

EcoCultura will exhibit two prototypes of bambu frames and will inform attendees about the BambooCo Bikes project planned to take place with the community of Montebello in alliance with Fundacion Escuela para la Vida and Coladisos.

We look forward to see you at the Festival!  It is a great opportunity to learn about the work taken place with bamboo at the national and international level, and about the benefits that these projects bring to the productive chain of a resource known as “the vegetable steel”.

El primer prototipo de BambooCo Cycles! – BambooCo Cycles first prototype!

Hola amigos y familiares!

Estamos felices de enviarles con esta nota una foto de nuestro primer prototipo de BambooCo Cycles.

BambooCo Cycles es la marca de las bicicletas con marcos de bambú y el proyecto piloto de EcoCultura. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo usar un producto amigable con el medio ambiente para crear un modelo de empresa solidaria y sostenible que contribuya al incremento de oportunidades de ocupación, desarrollo de un espíritu empresarial, y generación de ingresos en la población del corregimiento de Montebello de la ciudad de Cali.  Este proyecto a su vez busca establecer lazos con actividades de salud, educativas, culturales, y recreativas que mejoren de una manera integral la calidad de vida en esta comunidad generando orgullo y pertenencia.

Dos instructores expertos hacen parte de nuestro equipo y con ellos capacitaremos alrededor de 10 personas en la elaboración de los marcos. Este proyecto piloto tendrá una duración de 6 meses y uno de sus resultados será un plan de empresa que servirá como guía para montar la primera empresa de marcos de bicicleta en el corregimiento de Montebello y adaptarla a otras comunidades del país.

En el transcurso de este mes les estaremos contando sobre los avances del proyecto y de que manera pueden todos apoyarlo directamente.

Por hoy estamos felices de poder mostrarles la primera bicicleta BambooCo Cycles y quedamos atentas a sus comentarios!

We are thrilled to show you BambooCo Cycles first prototype!

BambooCo Cycles is the brand name for EcoCultura’s pilot Project:

–  Bamboo Bicycle frames made in Colombia  –

The pilot has the objective of using an environmentally friendly product to create a model for a collaborative and sustainable business. We want to contribute to the increment of occupation, development of an entrepreneurial spirit, and income generation for the community of Montebello in Cali, Colombia. This Project also looks to establish ties with the community by creating healthy, educational, cultural and recreational activities that can help raise the quality of life and reach a sense of pride in this community.

Two expert instructors from the US have joined our team and we will train 10 members of the community on how to fabricate the frames. This pilot project will last 6 months and as a result we will have a business model that will be the guide to start the first bamboo bike frames business in Montebello. The model can also be adapted to help start small businesses in other vulnerable communities in the country.

During this month we will keep you updated with our progress and will let you know how you can be a direct supporter.

Today we are excited to be able to show you the first BambooCo Cycle and we look forward to your comments!

Estableciendo alianzas / Establishing alliances

Durante nuestra estadía en Colombia buscamos establecer conexiones y alianzas con diferentes organizaciones, fundaciones, gremios, comunidades e individuos para buscar apoyo en áreas como diseño y capacitación, apoyo técnico, financiación, identificación de comunidades vulnerables, etc.

Tuvimos la fortuna que nos presentaran a las integrantes de la organización Coladisos. Coladisos es una Corporación sin ánimo de lucro que ofrece proyectos ambientales – usando el diseño como medio – dirigidos a población infantil y juvenil, madres cabeza de familia, y artesanos del Valle del Cauca. Con ellas hemos empezado un esfuerzo mutuo para impulsar un programa piloto en el que buscamos llegar a la producción y comercialización de 50 bicicletas, como un proceso de investigación para la viabilidad e implementación de esta empresa artesanal en Colombia. Las integrantes de Coladisos se enfocarán en la parte de diseño, desarrollo de producto y desarrollo de currículo de capacitación. También serán quienes nos representen en Colombia mientras nosotras enfocamos nuestros esfuerzos en buscar financiación y en la investigación de mercado desde Miami, Florida. Gracias Coladisos por todo su apoyo!

Visitamos instituciones educativas y centros de procesamiento con programas que trabajan el tema de la guadua. Con ellos conversamos sobre el uso de las instalaciones, la certificación académica de los talleres y la realización de las pruebas físico mecánicas que garanticen que los marcos cumplen con los estándares determinados por las normas y regulaciones para marcos de bicicletas.

Otra alianza muy importante que buscamos es con una organización que este realizando un trabajo de base con una comunidad vulnerable que pueda ser beneficiada. En Colombia abundan las comunidades con necesidad de ocupación y de generar mejores ingresos y hay organizaciones que vienen trabajando para el bien de estas comunidades. Las alianzas con estas organizaciones es importante ya que ellas conocen las necesidades de las poblaciones con las que trabajan, su cultura, fortalezas y potencial. Continuaremos estas conversaciones y visitas necesarias para poder encontrar la comunidad con la que se pueda dar un empalme natural para realizar el proyecto piloto. El modelo de empresa que surja de este piloto lo podremos replicar y adaptar en otras comunidades.

Estamos felices de haber conocido un grupo de arquitectos, empresarios, y diseñadores que mostraron gran admiración por los marcos de bambú y por todo el contenido social y ecológico detrás de su fabricación. Ellos ofrecieron su talento para crear la imagen del producto y apoyarnos en la comercialización de este.

También hablamos con artesanos y aficionados del ciclismo quienes están dispuestos a apoyar con capacitación y ejecución del proyecto. Nos sentimos muy afortunadas de estar rodeadas de un grupo de gente y organizaciones que creen en este proyecto y que en espíritu de colaboración han ofrecido su apoyo de diversas maneras para que este sueño se haga realidad. During our stay in Colombia we looked to establish connections and alliances with different organizations, foundations, communities and individuals that could support us in different areas such as design, capacitation, technical support, financing, identifying vulnerable communities, etc.

We had the fortune of being introduced to the members of Coladisos. Coladisos is a non-profit corporation that offers environmental projects – using design as a medium- and directed to children and youth, single mothers, and artisans in the Department of Valle del Cauca. We have started collaborating in a pilot program where we look to produce and sell 50 bicycles with bamboo frames, to investigate how to implement this small industry in Colombia. The members of Coladisos will focus on design, product development and the curriculum while we focus on finding financing and market research in Miami, Florida. Thank you Coladisos for all of your support!

We visited educative institutions and centers with programs for working with bamboo.  We had conversations about using their facilities, about academic certifications for the workshops, and the realizations of physical and mechanical tests that guarantee that the bamboo frames pass the norms and regulations required for bicycle frames.

Another important alliance to establish is with an organization that is currently working with a vulnerable community that could be benefitted by a project like ours. In Colombia there are many communities in need for occupation and better income and organizations that work to help them. An alliance with such organizations is important because they know the needs of each community, their strengths and their potential. We will continue conversations with them as well as visits to the communities, to ensure that we find the community that best fits this pilot project. The business model that will result from this project can be replicated in other vulnerable communities.

We are happy to have met a group of architects, entrepreneurs, and designers who have shown great admiration for the frames, and the social and environmental content behind their fabrication. They offered their talents to help us develop the image for this product and help us commercialize it.

We have also spoken with artisans and bicycle aficionados who are interested in supporting us by helping with the workshops and the execution of the project. We feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such a group of people and organizations that believe in this project and that in the spirit of collaboration, have offered their support to make this dream come true. Taller de prototipos / Prototype Workshop

Hola a todos de nuevo!

Con el animo de documentar el proyecto de los marcos en bambú para las bicis y de generar un intercambio que nos ayude en el proceso, continuamos con nuestro relato de las experiencias que vivimos en Colombia. Les agradecemos que nos compartan toda idea o sugerencia que se les occura pueda contribuir al exito del proyecto.

Esta vez les contaremos sobre como se dió el taller para hacer los prototipos y sobre las alianzas que empezamos a tejer.

Cuando conseguimos el bambú y la fibra en Colombia, nuestro plan era mandar las muestras a Estados Unidos para que Nick y Lars de Stalk Bicycles, hicieran un prototipo de marco para probar calidad de estas materias primas. En una de nuestras conversaciones con Lars, surgió la posibilidad de que él viniera a Colombia a enseñarnos a hacer los marcos. Nos alegró mucho que Lars se pudiera tomar ese tiempo para el viaje y empezamos a planear su estadia buscando un buen balance entre trabajo y diversión.

En primer lugar necesitabamos un espacio para el taller. Contamos con la suerte que nuestro amigo Pipe nos permitiera usar las instalaciones de su empresa Concreideas. Invitamos a Sandra y Luz América de Coladisos para que aprendieran la técnica y para que nos ayudaran a desarrollar el currículo para las capacitaciones. También nos acompañó Jairo, quien tiene amplia experiencia en control de calidad, y se encargó de identificar los puntos críticos en el proceso. Formamos un equipo pequeno con muy buena energia y tuvimos tambien el apoyo de los trabajadores de Concreideas quienes se portaron de maravilla. Nos habría gustado invitar a más personas a participar en este taller, pero Lars nos explicó que podría ser contra productivo.

Se nos presentaron algunos obstáculos que fuimos resolviendo poco a poco y que hicieron más valioso el aprendizaje. El mayor reto fue la busqueda contra el tiempo de algunos materiales que Lars despacho desde USA para asegurarse que tendriamos lo necesario para elaborar los prototipos. Lars envió el paquete por correo normal confiando en la oficina de correos que estimaron llegaria en 6 días. No contaron con el tiempo de aduana y despachos una vez en Colombia asi que los seis días se convertirían en un mes. Tuvimos entonces la oportunidad de confirmar que todos los materiales se consiguen en Colombia, determinar sus costos y probar su calidad.

Por los siguientes 5 días emprendimos un viaje increíble al mundo de fabricar marcos de bambú. Lars nos dió una introducción a la geometría de un marco y cómo se elabora el “jig” o molde que sostiene todas las partes en su lugar antes de ser ensamblado. Aprendimos a cortar bambú, a mezclar resinas, a lijar correctamente, a aplicar la fibra con la resina, a hacer las pruebas de calidad, a aplicar acabados, a resolver problemas y muchísimo más. Fueron cinco días de trabajo muy arduo, risas, conversaciones, amistades y aprendizaje. Como resultado tenemos ahora los dos primeros prototipos de marcos de bambú! Muchas gracias a todos los que participaron y nos colaboraron de alguna manera durante este taller. Ustedes hicieron de ésta una aventura exitosa y muy agradable. Especialmente gracias a Lars, que hizo de nuestro sueño una realidad.

Después del taller fuimos con Lars al eje cafetero, para que viviera la cultura del bambú en Colombia. Acampamos en el Valle del Cocora, nos bañamos en el agua helada de un río local, visitamos Salento, visitamos la planta de tratamiento de guadua en Pachamama, y paseamos por la región. Lars ha quedado enamorado de Colombia y desea regresar pronto.

Hello again everyone!

We continue to relate the experiences we lived in Colombia because our wish is to document the project for the bamboo bicycle frames, and to generate an exchange of ideas that can help us along the process.  We welcome each idea or suggestion you may have that can contribute to this project.

This time we will tell you about the workshop we had – where we built 2 bamboo frame prototypes- as well as the alliances we forged along the way.

Once we found the raw materials, we had planned to send them to the United States so Nick and Lars from Stalk Bicycles, could build a prototype and test the quality of these materials. In one of our conversations Lars suggested that he could come to Colombia and teach us how to make the frames. We were thrilled to know that Lars could take the time off to come to Colombia, and we started to plan his stay looking for a balance between hard work and play.

The first thing we needed was a place to hold the workshop and our friend Pipe offered the use of the installations at his company Concreideas. We invited Sandra and Luz America from Coladisos to come learn the technique and to help develop a curriculum for the workshops. We also had the help of Jairo, who has worked at quality control for many years, and who identified the critical points in the process that can assure a high quality product. We had a small yet energetic team and had the support of all the workers from Concreideas. We would have loved to have more people participate in the workshop, but Lars explained that too many people could have been counter-productive.

We had a few obstacles that were resolved along the way and in the end these obstacles enriched our learning experience. Our biggest challenge was to find alternatives for some materials that were sent from the US. We were told that the package sent form California would take 6 days to arrive in Colombia. The 6 days did not count the time at costumes and they would eventually become a month. We had to find alternatives and this was our opportunity to confirm that all the materials can be found in the country, and we were able to determine their cost and quality.

For the next 5 days we embarked on an incredible journey to fabricate bamboo bicycle frames. Lars gave us an introduction to bicycle geometry and how to build the “jig” or mold that holds the parts in place, before being assembled. We learned to cut the bamboo, to mix the resin, sand correctly, apply the fiber and resin, check for quality, apply finishes, problem shooting, and much more. It was 5 days of hard work, laughter, conversations, friendship and learning. As a result we now have the first two prototypes! Many thanks to all who participated and helped one way or another, and thanks to our friend Pipe, who let us use the facilities at his company Concreideas. You all helped make this a successful and very enjoyable experience!

After the workshop, we took Lars to the Coffee Region, so he could see the culture of bamboo in Colombia. We camped at Valle del Cocora, we bathed in cold drivers, visited the town Salento, we went to Pachamama – a bamboo treating plant- and we wondered around the region. Lars has been charmed by Colombia and he wishes to return soon.

Despega el proyecto en Colombia!-The project in Colombia takes off!

Saludos amigos y familiares!

Volvemos a escribir en nuestro blog después de varios meses. Tenemos muchas noticias que compartir sobre nuestro proyecto para elaborar marcos de bambú para bicicletas en Colombia.

A principios de este año hicimos un sondeo inicial en el cual visitamos varias organizaciones, universidades, artesanos, diseñadores y otros individuos en Cali, Bogotá, y el Eje Cafetero.  Los resultados fueron muy positivos  lo cual nos motivo mucho a continuar con el proyecto.

En el mes de junio regresamos al país con el objetivo de conseguir las materias primas e investigar más en detalle aspectos importantes para la elaboración del estudio de factibilidad del proyecto.

Resumir nuestras aventuras de este año en una sola entrada de blog resultaría en un texto muy largo, así que decidimos enfocarnos en nuestro último viaje y dividirlo en 4 partes:

• Buscando la materia prima
• Estableciendo alianzas
• Taller de prototipos
• Miami y el siguiente paso

En las semanas venideras estaremos actualizando nuestras entradas de blog para continuar informándolos de nuestros avances.

Para la búsqueda de la materia prima emprendimos viaje al Eje Cafetero. Esta zona es reconocida por su abundancia en guadua (Angustifolia Kunt), la variedad más común de bambú en Colombia y que ha sido tradicionalmente utilizada para la construcción de viviendas y estructuras, para la artesanía, y la elaboración de muebles entre otros múltiples usos. En nuestro viaje visitamos las corporaciones regionales, centros de procesamiento de la guadua, agricultores y proveedores de esta materia prima.

Inicialmente esperábamos utilizar la guadua con diámetros delgados pero en la investigación aprendimos que solo unas pocas plantas en un guadual joven cumplen con esos diámetros lo cual no garantiza suficiente disponibilidad. Así que nos vimos en la tarea de encontrar otra especie de bambú mas adecuada para los marcos, que abunde en Colombia y que se pueda cosechar sosteniblemente.

En la Corporación regional del Quindío nos informaron que en el eje cafetero hay sembradas unas 630 hectáreas de la especie Phyllostachys Aurea, una de las especies que hoy en día se utilizan para hacer estos marcos en otros países. Es originaria de Asia y fue introducida en Colombia hace tiempo y ya esta establecida con unas 50 a 100 hectáreas que se encuentran bajo planes de manejo con las corporaciones. Lo que esto significa es que hay disponibilidad y que se pueden obtener los permisos necesarios para cosechar este bambú sin afectar el medio ambiente.

Los centros de procesamiento de la guadua son una fuente de información importante pues reúnen al gremio de productores, cosechadores, transformadores y comercializadores de la guadua y velan por el correcto aprovechamiento de esta materia prima generando beneficios ambientales, culturales, sociales y económicos que garanticen su sustentabilidad.

Visitamos también agricultores y proveedores que saben cosechar e inmunizar correctamente el bambú Phyllostachys. Utilizan un proceso artesanal de secado a gas que aplicado dentro de los límites recomendados, fortalece las propiedades del bambú, lo hace más resistente y previene las rajaduras.

Esta experiencia nos mostró que hay abundancia de la materia prima que necesitamos, y que existen varios proveedores que tienen el conocimiento para cosecharla y  tratarla con métodos que respetan al medio ambiente y aseguran la calidad del producto.

También emprendimos la búsqueda de fibras naturales necesarias para las uniones de los marcos.  Stalk Bicycles, la compañía americana con quien estamos trabajando en este proyecto, utiliza la fibra de cáñamo para dichas uniones. En Colombia el cáñamo en su forma natural es difícil de encontrar así que tuvimos que buscar otras alternativas. En el departamento del Cauca encontramos abundancia de fique, fibra que se utiliza para hacer cabuya. Lars, de Stalk Bicycles confirmó que el fique es la misma fibra llamada Sisal en África, y que ellos la han utilizado en la construcción de sus marcos.

Contamos entonces con abundancia de fibra nacional para los marcos y para apoyar a los agricultores de fique con nuevos usos para su producto. Es nuestro deseo continuar la investigación de otras fibras naturales que puedan servir para la fabricación de estas bicicletas así como continuar la búsqueda de aplicaciones para el bambú que ayuden a generar otras fuentes de ingresos para los agricultores y artesanos.

Greetings friends and family!

We are back writing in our blog after several months. We have many news about our project to build bamboo frames for bicycles in Colombia.

At the beginning of the year we did an initial survey in Colombia about the project and contacted a number of  organizations, universities, artisans, designers and individuals to check the viability of such project. The results were very positive and we got highly motivated to continue.

In the month of June we went back to Colombia with the purpose of finding the raw materials and expanding our research of various important aspects for the feasibility study of the project.

To summarize our adventures of the past year in one blog entry would be too long, so we have decided to focus in our last trip and divide it into 4 parts:

• Searching for the raw materials
• Establishing alliances
• Prototype workshop
• Miami and the next step

In the coming weeks we will be updating our blog entries so we can continue to inform you of our accomplishments.

To initiate our search for raw materials we embarked in a trip to the Coffee Region in Colombia.  This area is well known for its abundance of “guadua” (Angustifolia Kunt) the most common species of bamboo in Colombia. Guadua has been traditionally used in the construction of buildings and structures, crafts, furniture and much more. In our trip we visited Regional Corporations, Centers for the Processing of Bamboo, farmers and bamboo providers.

Initially we wanted to use guadua with small diameters for the frames, but during our research we found out that only a few plants on a young guadua plantation have those diameters, which cannot guarantee enough availability. We had to find another species of bamboo adequate for the frames and with plentiful availability.

Through the Regional Corporation of Quindío we found that in the Coffee Region there are 630 hectares of the Phyllostachis Aurea bamboo, one of the species used today in the fabrication of bicycle frames in other countries.  This bamboo is native of Asia and it was introduced in Colombia a long time ago. Today this species is established in the country and there are about 50 to 100 hectares that are managed by the regional Corporations. What this means is that there is availability and it’s possible to get permits for harvesting this bamboo without damaging the environment.

The Centers for the Processing of Bamboo are an important source of information because they gather the farmers, providers, the people who process and commercialize the guadua and they watch that the methods used for this process generate social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits, therefore, guaranteeing their sustainability.

We also visited farmers and providers who know how to harvest and treat the Phyllostachys bamboo correctly. They use a traditional method for drying the stalks with a gas dryer. When this method is used within the recommended limits, it strengthens the properties of the bamboo making it more resistant and preventing splitting.

This experience showed us that there is an abundance of the raw material we need, and that there are several providers that have the knowledge for harvesting and treating the bamboo with methods that protect the environment and guarantee a high quality material.

We also embarked in a search for natural fibers necessary for the joints of the frames. Stalk Bicycles, the company working with us in this project, uses hemp for the joints. In Colombia hemp is difficult to find so we had to find alternative fibers.  In the Department of Cauca we found an abundance of “fique”, a fiber used to make rope. Lars, from Stalk Bicycles, confirmed that “fique” is the same fiber as “Sisal”, a fiber from Africa that they have used to build some of their frames.

We count on using this abundant fiber and support the ”fique” farmers with new uses for their product. It is our desire to continue researching fibers that can be used in the making of the frames, as well as finding other uses for bamboo as a way to create more revenue for farmers and artisans in Colombia.
